“I’m ready to fight the champion tomorrow,” Lerryan Douglas talks quick turnaround vs. Jamall Emmers at UFC Sacramento

Following a first-round finish over Julian Erosa in March of this year, “The Gunslinger” Lerryan Douglas looks to reload.

Douglas is set return against local Sacramento fighter Jamal Emmers at UFC Sacramento on Aug. 22. A veteran who has spent time on the fringe of the featherweight top 15, Emmers presents a matchup that appears pivotal in the career of the 31-year-old Douglas.

Having begun his professional career in 2013, the former LFA featherweight champion enters the UFC with a résumé built almost entirely on the regional circuit — and he’s not shy about pointing to that experience as what separates him from the wave of hyped-up prospects at 145 pounds.

“I don’t even like to compare myself as a prospect or like somebody new,” Douglas told MMA Island’s Michael Luis Hernandez. “I actually have twice as much experience as all these kids.”

That experience, paired with back-to-back highlight-reel knockout performances, is what Douglas believes has factored into how UFC matchmakers have tested him. The Bloodline Combat Sports product revealed that Emmers isn’t the highest-profile opponent he’s been offered during his time with the promotion — a ranked fighter was originally in talks for UFC 330 in Philadelphia before that bout fell through due to medical clearance issues on the other side.

“I’ve been offered like, I think a couple of ranked UFC fighters, and both of them I wasn’t medically able to make to the fight,” Douglas said. “So it seems that UFC are looking out for me, or, you know, taking my standards a little higher than usual.”

As for the matchup against the seasoned veteran, Douglas is expecting — and looking for — his seventh straight finish, and his third inside the Octagon within a year.

That finish-first approach has been further sharpened at Bloodline Combat Sports Agency, where Douglas trains under longtime UFC veteran Cub Swanson and alongside fellow UFC fighters Ethyn Ewing, Danny Silva, Jacob Rosales, and newest promotional signee Richie Miranda.

With the featherweight division churning out new prospects behind current champion Alexander Volkanovski, Douglas believes he’s already past the “prospect” label typically attached to fighters fresh off Dana White’s Contender Series.

Should he come out of August 22nd healthy, don’t be surprised if the Southern California native pushes for another quick turnaround in September, with UFC Noche or UFC 331 both on his radar.

“I’m looking for a finish, a quick finish,” Douglas said. “And if I can get it, if I’m healthy, I’m going to call out because I want to fight as soon as possible again. Maybe September 12th, maybe September 19th.”
