Tom Aspinall vacates UFC Heavyweight throne following severe eye injury setback

Tom Aspinall holding UFC heavyweight belt

The UFC heavyweight division was thrown into chaos Monday morning as reigning champion Tom Aspinall officially vacated the UFC heavyweight championship. Aspinall confirmed that a recent training setback aggravated a severe, pre-existing eye injury originally sustained during his UFC 321 title defense, leaving him unable to secure medical clearance. Rather than freeze the 265-pound ranks while pursuing further corrective procedures, the Salford native elected to relinquish the belt.

Training Complication Halts Aspinall’s Return Campaign

Aspinall had been ramping up live sparring rounds in Manchester with an eye on his late-2026 return. The original trauma stemmed from an accidental foul against Ciryl Gane in Abu Dhabi, which ended in an abrupt first-round no-contest. Multiple surgeries followed.

During a recent preparation cycle, an accidental strike to the same eye caused further trauma, instantly halting his comeback track. The technical reality of heavyweight MMA makes zero concessions for compromised vision. Competing against dynamic strikers when depth perception and peripheral defense are impaired is a non-starter for both fighter safety and regulatory commissions.

A Division Blown Wide Open

Aspinall’s exit strips the heavyweight bracket of its most lethal, well-rounded operator. He built his title run on rapid lateral footwork, lightning-quick level changes, and crisp, heavy-handed boxing inside the pocket. He refused to let the title sit idle:

  • Voluntary Relinquishment: Aspinall directly notified UFC Chief Business Officer Hunter Campbell and CEO Dana White that he would step aside rather than tie up top contenders.
  • Medical Priority: The former champion will step away from active training entirely until specialist evaluations verify full structural repair.
  • Contender Reshuffle: Ciryl Gane, Alexander Volkov, and Alex Pereira suddenly find themselves in the immediate crosshairs for an undisputed championship booking.

The UFC matchmakers must now pivot fast. While the promotion finalizes plans to crown a new undisputed king, the division loses a dominant champion in his physical prime. For Aspinall, the mission shifts from defending gold inside the Octagon to preserving his eyesight outside of it. If the surgeries take and the vision returns, the true heavyweight benchmark will be waiting to reclaim what he never actually lost in a fight.
